Millennium Volunteers (MV) gives young people a chance to build on their existing skills or interests. It allows them to develop themselves and help their community at the same time. MV's are recognised for their commitment after 100 and 200 hours of voluntary activity. The 100 hour Award is signed by the Minister for Skills and Vocational Education, and the 200 hour Award of Excellence is signed by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills.
Am I eligible?All people aged 16-24 can participate, whatever their backgrounds or abilities. Both employed and unemployed young people can join, as can those in full or part-time education.
How much time do you have to give?
There are no hard and fast rules; a little time can make a big difference. Generally, MV's aim to complete 200 hours within 12 months, but talk to MV and find out what's best for you and your commitments.One of the key principles of MV is about sustained commitment. We expect most young people to complete 200 hours within a year.Projects will take into account your individual circumstances, and young people who do not reach 200 hours within a year will sometimes get an Award of Excellence.Will MV help me get a job?
MV Projects provide opportunities for young people to volunteer their time for the benefit of others and their communities. However in a survey of previous MV's, 65% of MV's believed that participating in MV has increased their chances of employability. MV can help you develop skills such as team working and can increase your confidence in readiness for a work environment.
