Flying

 

When joining, cadets are offered the chance to fly light aircraft gliders, as well as other RAF and civilian aircrafts. When flying cadets have plenty of opportunities, from aerobics in the new Grob Tutor to practicing stalls in a Grob Viking Glider.Some Cadets who stand out from the rest may also get the opportunity to fly on a civil airliner or go on an overseas flight in an RAF Tri-Star, VC10 or Hercules. A few cadets have also had the opportunity to fly in a variety of other aircraft including fast jets and the Red Arrows. Cadets get exiting opportunities to learn how to fly or even get scholarships for both powered flight and gliding. Every cadet will get a go at flying and/or gliding within their time at the Air Training Corps.

Flying Awards

Flying Scholarships

Members of the ATC manage to win more than 260 of these scholarships from the RAF each year, more than is given to people applying from RAF recruitment offices. This scholarship enables cadets to gain 20hrs flying of the 40hrs required to pass their private pilots license (PPL). Again a certificate and badge are awarded on the successful completion of this course, along with the necessary paperwork necessary for if you wish to get your PPL.

Pilot Navigation Course

It is a two week course which allows cadets to fly up to eight hours in an AEF aircraft learning the skills necessary to navigate an aircraft. On successful completion of this course a badge and certificate are awarded
